Non-Experimental Research Methods: Qualitative Case Study, Thematic Analysis, and Sampling from Populations Qualitative case study method is an approach to evaluate groups, individuals, or organizations (or a combination), where cases are those of focus (Privitera, 2017). There are several types of case studies; depending on what needs to be explored determines the type of study that may be implemented, such as using cases for theoretical development or those for a broader investigation. Furthermore, a case study may be single (having one case) or multiple in design. For example, exploring an individual’s experiences of depression may qualify as a single case study, only utilizing the one individual; or there may be a need to consider several individuals in a given group or among groups, which would elicit consideration for a multiple case study design (Privitera, 2017). However, this depends on how the cases are defined, such as the entire group or those individuals in the group. This is also why determining both the appropriate population and sample process are crucial, no matter the design. This week, you will evaluate and critique various types of case studies, their applications, considerations for use, distinguish between multiple and single cases, justify designs, as well as explore sampling from populations (important for any design, whether experimental or non-experimental) and a particular form of analysis called thematic analysis. You will specifically evaluate the case design and its use as well as how thematic analysis may be used for primary and supportive purposes. Pt 1:You will now add information from this week’s materials to your Research Chart. In the corresponding section, provide the name(s) of the method you reviewed, its primary use and when it should be used, strengths and limitations of the method, ethical considerations, and one example of when the method could be used (include your interests or something more general). In addition to the method, add a special section on sampling (as this must be considered, no matter the method) where you indicate the difference between target population and an accessible population, the difference between probability sampling and non-probability sampling, what sampling error means, and the difference between sampling bias and nonresponse bias.Length: Updated research chart, not including title and reference pages. Pt 2: For this assignment, you will examine the case study method. Prepare a brief paper to address the following: Explain the types of case studies used in qualitative research and provide an example of each.
Determine the factors for a case study to be considered “single” or “multiple” in design.
Describe the data that are typically collected and analyzed in a case study design. Explain what determines the type of collection and analysis process used, and how you plan to assess the boundaries of the case.
Describe the steps identified in this week’s readings for conducting a thematic analysis, and then discuss how you would apply each of them to a given qualitative data set and case study method (such as interviews from a given sample).
Support your assignment with at least one scholarly resource. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.Length: 1-2 pages, not including title and reference pagesYour assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.Pt 3:For this week’s reflection, consider the following points: Explain the research situations that may require you to use the qualitative case study method (be sure to give examples/be specific).
Examine the limitations and benefits learned about this method and its use.
Analyze any ethical considerations with implementing this method based on overarching ethical issues that can occur in qualitative research.
Reflect on your experience with this week’s case study activity.
Include any questions you may have for your professor.
